About Us

Canaan Valley Flower Company

People come to Canaan Valley for many reasons: to explore, unwind, escape, ski, hike, watch wildlife, and feel close to the mountains. Flowers belong in that story too. Growing flowers and herbs here comes with its own challenges and rewards. The season is shorter and, year-round, the weather keeps us humble. Canaan Valley Flower Company works with the landscape rather than against it, cultivating flowers and herbs suited to life in the mountains. The result is a micro-farm that reflects the character of the place it calls home, shaped by its surroundings and inspired by nature's beauty.

This is Mountain Grown.

Meet the Farmer

Hello!

I’m Lizz, the owner and Director of Blooms & Wonder at Canaan Valley Flower Company, growing cut flowers, edible flowers and herbs in Tucker County, West Virginia.

My husband, Tom, and I first met here years ago. After more than 20 years living and working around the world, including nearly a decade in Africa, we found our way back to Canaan Valley with our dog, Daisy, and brought our green thumbs with us. Now we are living the dream!

Flowers have always been a part of my life. I grew up in a family of gardeners, worked at a pick-your-own strawberry farm as a teenager. Throughout my years of humanitarian and development work, I sought out gardens around the world, from London allotments, to Asian botanical gardens, even African urban slum gardens. Everywhere I lived, I gardened.

After living and growing in many different corners of the world, it feels so right to be growing flowers and herbs here in Canaan Valley. That’s is why I started Canaan Valley Flower Company: to bring the beauty of flowers and the benefits of gardens to all ages and abilities.

The seasons arrive here on their own schedule — and the flowers know it. Canaan Valley Flower Company’s ethos is to work in sync with nature. Our micro-farm sits in a landscape known for its wild beauty, with the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge as our neighbor. The forests and fields, birds and pollinators, and mountain ranges that draw people to this valley inspire what we do and how we do it.

Canaan Valley Flower Company focuses on growing plants that thrive in this mountain climate. Working with the rhythms of the seasons, we grow a wide variety of long-lasting seasonal flowers and herbs. We keep the use of pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides to a minimum.

Alongside flower farming, I hold a certificate in horticultural therapy from the Horticultural Therapy Institute at Colorado State University. I enjoy designing and hosting workshops that bring people together to plant, arrange, and design with seasonal flowers.

Flowers have a way of marking the moments that matter. It’s my pleasure to be growing them here for the homes, tables, and celebrations that make life so special in this beautiful part of the world.

Let there be flowers!
