Let’s See What Grows

Hello!

As I sit to write this, there is yet more cloudy, grey snow falling outside my window, and we are in a run of some of the coldest temps yet this winter. The horizon is obscured as if there is Vaseline smeared on my glasses. (Which gets me wondering again: is this what Pantone had in mind with Cloud Dancer—er, white—as the color of the year? Really?) Thick layers of ice and snow make it cumbersome to maneuver and nearly impossible to clear. “Dig deep” is a metaphor, not an item on the To-Do list.

At the turn of the year, I did the exercise many of us do of choosing a thematic word for the year. It’s a great touchstone—admittedly one that can get lost in the shuffle and flurry (get it?) of daily life. For Canaan Valley Flower Company, I chose Delight and held on to Wonder from last year, adding a challenge: Let’s see what grows!

In the spirit of accountability (to myself, at least) – and keeping with Let’s see what grows! – here’s a promised amaryllis update: blooms!

Revelation (the one in this photo that I took yesterday) truly is a cherry-red speckled and lightly streaked delight. Some Boleros are already opening to their own slow, sultry rhythm, while others are just beginning to show green shoots. And the Cherry Blossoms have taken the meteorologist’s advice to “hunker down” seriously. They are still modest in height, but already forming buds.

I like to think that their stature reflects my own learning curve: growth at its own pace, with emerging promise. They remind me that at this time of year, I need not do more, but rather pace myself and stick to what matters.

And maybe it’s not just me, my friends. Cue that online yoga class, simmer a pot of something nourishing and aromatic on the stove, and buy an amaryllis (or two!).

Let there be flowers—in January!

Lizz
