Oh, they tell me your love is like a flower
Hello!
We have reached the point in summer when car windows and front doors are proverbially kept shut, lest unwanted surplus zucchini be bestowed upon the unwitting. Indeed, there is currently a cardboard box of them by our garage door – a bonus treat with any bouquet pick-up!
This is already the final week of the Season Pass bouquet subscription pilot. The components – SMS messages, flexible pick-up options, and, of course, the bouquets – seem to be working well. I have enjoyed the creative rhythm of working with each week’s harvest to make a set of bouquets, and it has been lovely to see the flower-loving, friendly faces of the passholders on a regular basis.
So, deeming the pilot a success, I will offer a new Season Pass in mid-August. More information about that in two weeks – but first, there is bluegrass!
I’m looking forward to Pickin’ in Parsons 2026. I took the stage flowers there this week – purples, yellows, and greens this year – and they look so pretty.
This annual project is different from making bouquets and a bit of a puzzle. Each letter in PICKIN’ IN PARSONS is painted with sparkly, sequined white paint on a black-painted cinder block. I place the flowers, still in their nursery pots, into the blocks. It’s sort of like filling planters, except these plants, which have been growing since spring, are in 5- to 6-inch pots and need to be in bloom this week. To add to the challenge, the openings of the blocks aren’t all the same size, which means I need a couple of different sizes of small pots. It’s a squeeze on the flowers’ roots and a game of trimming, timing and luck.
Once the plants are in place, I do my best to stop fretting and just enjoy the music. That is not difficult. The festival line-up includes bands I love, and each year there is talent that is new to me.
All to say, I am determined to take and enjoy the break.
That means that if you need flowers or herbs, come see me this Friday evening at the Davis Farmers and Artisans Market, this Saturday morning at the Canaan Valley pop-up, or send me an email soon. Next weekend, August 7 and 8, I will be filling some custom orders but I will not be at either market.
